Washington, D.C.— Patients First, A Project of Americans for Prosperity™ is praising efforts by Senate Republicans to prevent more than $400 Billion from being slashed from Medicare as part of the controversial health care overhaul that has been proposed by Democrats. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has proposed a critical amendment that would protect seniors and the social program from more than $400 Billion in planned cuts.
“The McCain Amendment is an absolutely essential safeguard to protect America’s seniors,” said Dr. Eric Novack, an orthopedic surgeon and patients’ advocate with the group Patients First. “This Washington takeover legislation would cut nearly $465 Billion in Medicare funding for seniors. This is an awful bill, and these drastic Medicare cuts for seniors are completely unacceptable. Medicare also needs reform, but if there are truly hundreds of billions of dollars that can be saved in Medicare, those funds should be kept within Medicare to shore up its finances and reduce its outrageous unfunded liabilities.”
President Obama and Congressional Leaders promised to pass health care legislation that would control costs and not add to the federal budget deficit. In order to achieve these goals, Medicare funding has been placed on the chopping block.
“America’s seniors are being sacrificed as Washington transfers funds from Medicare to pay for expensive new entitlement programs,” said Dr. Novack. “Harry Reid has taken out the scalpel and chainsaw in his effort to ration care for seniors to pay for this 2,074-page legislative behemoth that will still cost taxpayers trillions while diverting Medicare funds and leaving 24 million Americans uninsured. This is not real reform.”
